Like many people I too many have placed too much expectations on the sequel due to the first one by Cronenberg having hit the mark (and then some) quite admirably. However as you mentionned in your essay, THE FLY II does stand up on it's own when viewed for what it is rather than what it is reguarded as what it "should" be. Yes, perhaps for the most part, the sequel is "un-necessary" and is principally a decently-produced horror fest, it nonetheless does deliver quite impressive moments and very decent acting.
